ASP (Active Server Pages) A Microsoft technology allowing the insertion of server executable scripts in web pages.

Bit Map Image A dot matrix image where each dot is represented by one bit in the digital memory. Complex images are built up using these dots. Resolution of about 300 dots per inch may require approximately I Mbyte for a complete A4 page.

Cache In web terms: A web browser or web server feature which stores copies of web pages on a computer's hard disk.

Character A symbol used in a writing system. In most western languages the letters A to Z, a to z, 0 to 9 and punctuation characters such as : ; , ? etc. |
CMYK - (Process color) printing four colors, cyan, magenta, yellow, and black to create a full color image.

CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) A W3C recommended language for defining style (such as font, size, color, spacing, etc.) for web documents.

EPS Encapsulated postscript, a very versatile file format used for sending files to commercial printers, and thus avoiding the cost of typesetting. [See postscript.] |
Flash A vector-based multimedia format developed by Adobe for use on the web.

Font A complete collection of letters, punctuation marks, numbers, and special characters with a consistent and identical typeface, weight (Roman or bold), posture (upright or italic) and font size. Technically, font still refers to one complete set of characters in a given typeface, weight, and size, such as Helvetica italic 12 - but the terms has come to be used interchangably for refering to typefaces or font families.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) One of the most common methods for sending files between two computers.

HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) HTML is the language of the web. HTML is a set of tags that are used to define the content, layout and the formatting of the web document. Web browsers use the HTML tags to define how to display the text. |
HTML Tags Code to identify the different parts of a document so that a web browser will know how to display it.
Illustrator Part of the Adobe suite of applications, Illustrator is a vector based illustration package, use for a wide range of illustration work logo creation, charts and graphs to digital art illustrations.
InDesign Part of the Adobe suite of applications, primarily used for page layout for print and interactive PDF generation

Java A programming language developed by SUN. Mostly for programming web servers and web applets.

JPEG and JPG Graphic formats for storing compressed images.

Leading the space between lines of type. It is generally measured from baseline to baseline and expressed in points. The name leading is derived from the days of hot metal type when strips of lead were placed between lines of type to provide line spacing.

Ligature Two or more letters combined into one character make a ligature. In typography some ligatures represent specific sounds or words such as the capital AE diphthong ligature or used primarily to make type more attractive on the page such as the fl and fi ligatures. In most cases, a ligature is only available in extended characters sets or special expert sets of fonts. |
Meta Tags Tags inserted into documents to describe the document.

Page layout is the placement of design items within the page.
Photoshop Part of the Adobe suite of applications, Photoshop is a powerful bitmap image editor, used for retouching, logo work, website image processing, print image processing and most other image realted work.

Postscript A print description language used as a way of communicating with printers that is not dependent on program, operating system or model of computer. Desk Top Publishing can produce EPS (encapsulated postscript) files on disks which can then be sent to high volume print companies, thereby saving the expense of typesetting and allowing the small system user access to professional quality publication.
Quark Express Once the leading DTP page layout tool, still in use today however most print work is done with InDesign, an Adobe package that does the same thing.

Resolution The amount of detail visible in any display or copy. Most computer system output devices produce images from a matrix of small dots. Resolution then depends on the size and number of dots per unit length or area.

Sans serif Characters which do not have serifs. (Sans is French for 'without').

Scripting Language In web terms: A simple programming language that can be executed by a web browser or a web server. See JavaScript and VBScript. |
Serif The short cross lines at the end of characters. These are intended to make letters more easily recognized.

SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language) An international standard for markup languages. The basis for HTML and XML.

Shockwave A format (technology) developed by Adobe for embedding multimedia content in web pages. |
XHTML (Extensible Hypertext Markup Language) HTML reformulated as XML. XHTML is the latest version of HTML. Developed by W3C.

XML (Extensible Markup Language) A simplified version of SGML especially designed for web documents, developed by the W3C. |
XML Schema A document that describes, in a formal way, the syntax elements and parameters of a web language. Designed by W3C to replace DTD.

ZIP A compressing format for computer files. Commonly used for compressing files before downloading over the Internet. ZIP files can be compressed (ZIPPED) and decompressed (UNZIPPED) using a computer program like WINZIP. |
